Day 20: We Cheated.

The rules (which were arbitrarily created by us the night before the project began)  clearly state that we aren't going to eat out unless invited as part of a social occasion.  Today we cheated.

It wasn't even a little accidental cheat like a drive through coffee and a muffin. It was a full blown we're-only-half-way-done-our-errands, the-kids-are-hungry, and-it's-too-rainy-for-a-picnic... rules shmules, we're going to Pizza Hut for lunch sort of cheat.

It just seemed...simpler.

And then we ran into the grocery store for a couple things, including lemons so that I could make fresh lemonade for my husband's birthday party this weekend and....

I forgot my reusable produce bags.

So today was kinda a big fat fail.  I'm going to go feed my kids banana smoothies and popcorn for supper.  It's that kind of day....

We are doing one small thing (almost) every day for a year to create a simpler, quieter, more intentional life. Take a moment to read all About Us, check out The Rules of our year long project and sign up for our RSS feed or "like" us on facebook so that you can follow our journey to radical simplicity!

  2. don't beat yourself up over this. it's okay to have a little teat now and then. the kids will think it's special. that's how I grew up.

  4. It could be worse. Pizza Hut isn't all bad.

  5. Some days are like that & especially with kids, you've gotta go with the flow!! Today I had my clothes drying outside & they got rained on- so, they went into the dryer for a few minutes longer than I wanted them to. And I still haven't thrown my old make-up away...

Ah well... thankfully, life goes on... :-)

  6. Thank you for showing that we all have these days ! Doesn't change our goals, doesn't change what we hope to be - it just shows that we are human and sometimes need an easier day...I love this blog and I'm not following along exactly, but we're doing our own version. You are inspiring so many people to do something we never considered...to need less. If you choose to have dinner out like this - to me it is still an intentional choice, rather than a random routine. It is far from failure.

  7. You did not fail. You were real about how life is sometimes not what we expect or even plan.

    2. Agreed! We all have days. Hey, I have cheated and used the dryer half the time so far this month. It's still 50% better than last month!

  10. In this case, "simplicity" meant feeding your kids quickly and conveniently. And it also means ditching formal dinner for smoothies and popcorn. I see this as being 100% within your objectives for this challenge! Don't be too hard on yourself. =)

  11. You are human and an amazing one, this shows just how much you can connect to your readers. I am still inspired by all that you do and it's even more encouraging to know that even the best of intentions can go awry and that it's perfectly OK!

  12. Rules are made for bending, breaking, and going around. They are a guide and just like a vacation guidebook sometimes taking the road or street not in the guide leads to a wonderful time or place.

I know that pizza must have tasted sooooo good.

  13. Love the honesty! Sometimes those days happen and that's when we realize the true purpose of convenience eating and shopping...for convenience's sake. Get back on that horse Kelly, tomorrow is a brand new day!

  14. I love all your ideas... and that I'm not the only one who feeds her kids (and self) smoothies and popcorn for dinner. I think that's a very well-rounded meal. :)

  15. We ARE friends and God has just smiled on me! I love this post! LOVE it!

We totally have wrecked the three meals a day plan this week. I've packed picnic lunches four out of five days and we have eaten when we are hungry.
We had ice cream for supper yesterday! =)

  16. Hee hee, I am familiar with that smoothie dinner! Truly enjoying your blog, we've been inspired to simplify too. I told hubby instead of Minimalists, we can be Deliberatists ... So we keep things we use and love, the rest is just energy draining clutter. Thanks for your motivation!

  17. Thank you for being so real!
Yesterday, I used a dryer to dry a couple of rag rugs.
Dinner for me was raspberry jam, a mango, and a cucumber. Random, but I was so tired from cleaning the floors (with hot water and leftover liquid handwash :) ).
    Have a super day today!

  18. Well, the good news is that if you got through this entire challenge without a few speedbumps, you'd be too perfect and nobody would want to read your blog. So think of it as buying yourself some credibility. :D

Perhaps thinking of it as outreach to the Pizza Hut staff might also help?

In all serious, thanks for being real and for the continued inspiration! :)

  22. I went to put one of my pot holders away this morning, and realized that I too had forgotten my reusable produce bags at home (...again *sigh*). It happens, and just makes it that much better when you do remember. I am loving your new blog, and am slowly convincing the hubby on many of the changes you've made, as well as some of our own. I just wrote my intro blog post about the changes hubby and I have been making and linked your blog if you want to see. :)

  23. Been there, done that! I have 5 kids and the oldest is 7. I fail every single day! I'm definitely a minimalist though so my life is not crazy insane with lots of stuff, but sometimes you gotta let some one else feed the kids and clean up after them. I mean, they eat every single day, multiple times!!!! Can you believe that?

  24. Don't think of it as cheating. You enacted reactive protocols at the monthly level.

Your life is a steam motor and the world is your heat source. Since your heat source isn't steady, you constantly have to be checking the gauges. Periodically you have to bleed off the steam or else the system over-pressurizes and you'll have to order a new safety plug.

And that's why I keep convenience food in the freezer even though I don't ever want to eat it.

  25. Thank God you are normal! :)
I wqas reading your blog thinking "WOW! What a great idea need to do this in my family!" And the afterthought - o, it is drastic, can I do this?
Reading this post I realised you don't have to be perfect, just give it your best. :) Thank you for the posts, the ideas and wishing you all the best!
