Day 72: Sermon on the Mount Month!

It is the first day of October, and the first day of the October monthly challenge:  Sermon on the Mount month!  Are you in?

The Task:  Read Matthew chapters 5,6 & 7 every single day for a month.

The Why: I shared the why of this challenge when I announced it last week.  Basically, I believe that the Sermon on the Mount is radical and challenging, that God's economy of love and redistribution and reconciliation is powerful and relevant and...beautiful. I want the red letter words of Christ to shape me and change me.

The How:  I'm not a super disciplined person, so I need to make little rules for myself in order to make God's word the priority it ought to be.  Like not allowing myself to use facebook in the morning until after I've read the scripture passage.

Many of you have expressed that you will be joining the challenge.  Yay!   Please feel free to come back to this post throughout the month and share how the challenge is going, what you are noticing in God's word that you've always seemed to miss in the past, what you are struggling with or convicted of or inspired by. May the Spirit of God move boldly in each of us this month!

  1. Looking forward to this challenge! My husband and I have been using the Read Through the Bible Program for Shirkers and Slackers (Google it, it's great!) but might appreciate this for a change of pace.

  4. I am in, too! This will be a great kick-start to regular daily scripture reading. I have a few questions for God that require answers...and so I need to establish a routine.

  5. I made the same rule for myself!
I'm excited to implement this as part of my 31 Day Challenge!

  6. I have to say, last week when you mentioned the challenge, I was in between Bible studies and excited to start the challenge. I decided to pray and study in depth each verse, one by one. I'm now through all of the beatitudes and WOW has God opened my eyes and shown me so much!! I can hardly wait to see what His plans are through this challenge!

  9. I'm not very disciplined either, but I would like to give this a shot. I've been meaning to pick up the Word again on a daily basis, so this might be just what I need to get back in the habit again. I'll let you know how it goes.

  10. I am in too. Blogged it to hold myself even more accountable, because I too need extra help getting into the Word like I need to. Thanks!

  11. I love your idea and want to participate; I will add it to my current daily devotions as best I can. Here is something very sad that leads one to righteous anger and more fervent prayer:

  12. I wanted to share an idea if anyone is interested. Bible Gateway offers 33 different English translations of the Bible. I've decided to read a different translation every day of this challenge. If you've never experienced a different translation, this may be a good way to sample them. God bless :)

  13. I realize I'm late to this, but just found your blog today. I actually started memorizing the Sermon on the Mount in September, but then got lazy. I think this challenge of reading it every day for the rest of the month is just what I need to get me back to memorizing it. My goal was to memorize it by the end of the year.

  14. Oh, I wish I had found this sooner! My 31 days this month is also to read God's Word first before any other online activity. I'll have to poke around here a bit and catch up on what's been going on.
